We have, at a minimum, three events a week held at locations all across the Triangle area.
After a quick look, I saw book clubs, speed-dating clubs, social clubs, cultural clubs, clubs for vegetarians, motorcyclists, dancers, singles -- all for African-Americans.
You might join one of them and ask their members their opinions. It's a fact of the human condition that many people (not all) feel more comfortable with people from similar backgrounds.
